Diving into my project's depths, I embarked on a contextual journey through history, society, and contemporary life. Central to my exploration is the ancient Indian tradition of women veiling their faces with shawls, symbolizing sanctity and privacy. This ritual, steeped in cultural significance, now manifests in modern expressions of solace and concealment.
Rooted in India's cultural fabric, women's veiling practices reflect a blend of modesty, tradition, and spirituality. Research revealed parallels between this tradition and present-day behaviors, notably the resurgence of mask-wearing amid COVID-19. Insights from artists and designers illuminated the fusion of culture and personal boundaries, guiding my quest to unravel human behavior's intricacies across time and culture.
Design Inspiration
The inspiration behind Flexum encompasses a fusion of cultural heritage and contemporary design principles. Influenced by the folding techniques of traditional folding fans and the artistry of paper origami, Flexum embodies a harmonious blend of ancient tradition and modern innovation. Each design element is crafted, drawing from the intricate folds of origami and the graceful movements of a fan. The back piece, inspired by the diagonal knife fold, provides structural support, while the front piece features a delicate butterfly fold, symbolizing elegance and freedom. Through these design elements, Flexum not only offers practical functionality but also serves as a homage to the timeless beauty of design and tradition.
Design Development
The design development process for my project was a journey of exploration and refinement, guided by the inspiration of folding techniques from traditional folding fans. Initially considering jewelry pieces like an ear cuff or a clutch, I was drawn to the concept of creating a wearable art piece reflecting the elegance and symbolism of fans while addressing personal space and protection. Discussions with tutors led to the intriguing idea of exploring wearables further, resonating with the historical significance of fans as symbols of status and privacy for women. Iterative refinement, fueled by collaborative brainstorming sessions and feedback, resulted in a versatile, foldable headgear seamlessly integrating fan-inspired elegance with modern needs for personal space and protection.
Material Composition
In addressing the Materials and Installation aspect of my project, I balanced functional needs with conceptual storytelling. Denim emerged as the ideal material, chosen for its versatility, durability, and contemporary appeal. Its fluidity lends itself to the desired flowy structure, while its fold-ability aligns with portability. Denim's association with youth culture resonates with the target audience, heightened by the use of black and blue shades for visual contrast. To reinforce structural integrity, a fabric patch was added to the back, with metal press-on buttons securing components. Adjustable features prioritize user experience, ensuring a comfortable fit. Installation is seamless, requiring minimal setup, and clear instructions enhance usability. This approach harmonizes practicality, aesthetics, and user-centric design, resulting in a cohesive wearable accessory.
